Animal Print Is Back: 8 Designer Clutches Under $1,000 to Wear This Fall

Animal print bags are back for fall, but that does not mean your closet suddenly needs leopard pants, a zebra coat, and three printed sweaters.
At Stylishly Grounded, we are not big on chasing trends just because they are having a moment. We would rather find the version that is actually wearable and useful. And animal print works really well in a bag.
A clutch or small shoulder bag gives you the trend without forcing you to build an entire outfit around it. Wear black, denim, chocolate brown, burgundy, or a simple dress and let the bag do the work. And while you can easily spend $3,000-plus on a designer clutch, there are plenty of great designer bags under $1,000 that still feel special.
We are using “clutch” a little loosely here. Most of these are true designer clutches, but we also included a few compact shoulder bags that do the same job: small, polished, practical enough to carry, and interesting enough to make a basic outfit better.

1. STAUD Harlow Bag in Cheetah

STAUD is one of those brands I consistently go back to for bags that feel current without looking like they were designed for one season only. The Los Angeles-based brand describes itself as a ready-to-wear line built around chic essentials and stand-alone pieces, and its bags tend to hit that same balance.
The Harlow is one of my favorite STAUD shapes, and the cheetah haircalf version is especially good. The elongated shape keeps it sleek, while the red leather trim and oversized Moon buckle give it enough personality that it does not disappear into the rest of your outfit. Wear it with a simple black look and you are done.
2. Liffner Pushlock Clutch in Leopard

This is probably my favorite actual clutch on the list.
Liffner does Scandinavian restraint with Italian craftsmanship, which is exactly why the Pushlock works. The leopard haircalf gives it interest, but the shape itself is clean and elegant. Nothing about it feels fussy or overly formal.
It also holds a decent amount for a clutch. There is room for a phone and cardholder, plus an interior pocket, so you are not carrying a beautiful bag that becomes annoying five minutes after leaving the house. This is the kind of piece that can completely change a basic evening look without fighting with it.

3. Veronica Beard Dash Clutch in Zebra

Veronica Beard has built its brand around what it calls “cool classics”: polished pieces made for women who are moving between different parts of their day. That is also what makes the Dash clutch so useful. It looks polished enough for evening, but it is not precious.
The classic Dash is now out in zebra-print calf hair, and this may be one of the easiest versions to style. The slim shape and belted front keep the animal print structured, and the removable shoulder strap means you can actually put it on your shoulder when you get tired of carrying it.
I would wear this with a mostly neutral outfit and let the tan-and-black print be the accessory.
Also available at Bloomingdale’s.
4. Noam Hazan Adriane Clutch in Black Panther

This was my discovery of the list.
I stumbled across Noam Hazan while searching for animal-print bags, saw this black-and-white Adriane, and immediately stopped. The brand was founded around handcrafted accessories and still puts a lot of emphasis on pieces being shaped, braided, stitched, and finished by hand.
But mostly: look at this bag.
The black-and-white pattern makes it feel cooler and a little less expected than another brown leopard clutch. The East-West shape is sleek, the pony-hair texture gives it depth, and it comes with a removable leather strap if you want another way to carry it.
This is a must-buy for me and one that is going straight toward the top of my own list.

5. Reformation Sofia East-West Shoulder Bag in Deer Print

If you want the animal-print look but do not actually want to carry a clutch, the Reformation Sofia is a good choice and a definite show stopper..
Reformation officially calls this Fawn Haircalf, but visually it gives you that deer-print effect: warm brown with lighter markings and a lot of texture. The long East-West shape keeps it modern, and it is large enough for a wallet, phone, keys, and the random lip products that end up coming everywhere with you.
Nothing complicated here. Jeans and a black top. Black trousers and a sweater. A simple slip dress. Put this on and the outfit is finished.

6. Reformation Inez Clutch in Dalmatian

I love a Dalmatian print.
This is exactly the kind of accessory that makes getting dressed easier: wear the most basic outfit imaginable and make it interesting with the bag. The Inez has a softer folded shape instead of the rigid structure of a traditional evening clutch, which makes the black-and-white print feel a little more relaxed.
It also passes the practical test. It has room for a phone, wallet, keys, and lipstick, so you are not rearranging your life around a tiny bag.
Wear all black and carry this. Done.

7. Mansur Gavriel Filo Calf Hair Shoulder Bag in Cow Print

SHOP THE MANSUR GAVRIEL FILO AT NORDSTROM
I love this Mansur Gavriel bag.
The Filo has a clean, compact East-West shape, which is exactly what makes the cow-print calf hair work. There is already a lot happening in the material, so the bag itself does not need extra hardware or a complicated silhouette.
It is small, but not novelty-bag small, and the zip-top shape makes it easy for dinner, drinks, or an event where you want something more interesting than a basic black shoulder bag. This one feels especially good if you like animal print but do not want leopard.
Also available at Bergdorf Goodman.
8. SIMKHAI Piedra Calf Hair Shoulder Bag in Zebra Print

This one is stunning.
The SIMKHAI Piedra has a completely different mood from the brighter animal prints above. The oversized zebra pattern comes in deep cacao and black, and the gold-beaded cord strap makes the whole thing feel dark, textured, and very fall.
This is the one I would pair with black, deep burgundy, dark denim, or chocolate brown. It has enough going on that the rest of the outfit can stay incredibly simple.
If you want the moodiest bag on the list, this is it.

Also available at Revolve.
The Stylishly Grounded Perspective: Final Thoughts
At Stylishly Grounded, we like trends best when they make the clothes you already own more useful. Animal print bags do exactly that.
Instead of buying five trend pieces—or spending $3,000 on a clutch—buy one really good bag that works with outfits you already wear. If it makes black trousers, jeans, and a simple dress look better, it is probably worth buying.
For the most classic option, start with the Liffner Pushlock. For something less expected, look at Noam Hazan. And if your wardrobe is mostly dark fall colors, I love the SIMKHAI Piedra.
